What better time to blow a Friday deadline for an article like this one than the breezy powdery end of November? Half of the art world was stuck on snowy flights or awkwardly explaining their hobbies/careers to nodding family members, while the other half is still cutting out lines in anticipation of Miami art fairs. The good news is that it’s been a slow couple weeks, so I’ll quickly blow through this month’s What You Should Have Noticed in November.
Dieter Roelstraete is Leaving the MCA
As suggested and rumored last month, the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Manilow Senior Curator, Dieter Roelstrate, is leaving the Museum following the announcement that he will join the curatorial team for Documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany, and Athens, Greece. (On the plus side, I get to draw Dieter two months in a row). Roelstraete’s partner, Monika Szewczyk, will also be joining the Documenta 14 team, but no word yet on whether she’s leaving her curatorial position at the University of Chicago.
DCASE Residencies Announced
This came out at the very tail end of October, but the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) finally announced the winners of its inaugural curatorial and artist residencies. The list of fellows include curators Allison Glenn (director at Monique Meloche Gallery) and Ross Jordan (SAIC Curatorial Fellow), and Alexandria Eregbu, Adebukola Bodunrin, Mahwish Chishty, Faheem Majeed / Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford, Cecil McDonald, and Cheryl Pope. Let’s see what they do.

Detroit Won’t Be Selling Its Art
The Detroit Institute of Art’s collection is in safe hands after years of increasing pressure to auction off the artworks as part of the city’s restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings. The ‘Grand Bargain’ ensures that the collection will remain intact.
ArtPrize Is Launching ArtPrize Dallas
ArtPrize, the popular and well-funded art competition, based yearly in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is launching a second competition in Dallas, Texas. Can founder Rick DeVos repeat his success in the south? Tune in next year.
New York Contemporary Art Auction Hits $850 (Fucking) Million
More than 500 bidders came together this month to float more than seventy-five works of art on a massive pool of investment capital. Topping the spreadsheets was Warhols Triple Elvis [Ferus Type], which sold for $81.9 million, moistening yards of wool across the globe.
Pope.L’s Trinket Goes to MOCA
MOCA announced its 2015 lineup this month. Along with Mathew Barney, and R.H. Quaytman, Chicago-based artist William Pope.L will feature at the museum, along with his massive 2008 sculpture Trinket, a fifty-foot by twenty-foot America flag rippling in the wind of industrial fans.
