This week Duncan returns to his homeland. A nation that although slightly socialist, does not own it’s own insurance agency or mortgage lender. What it does have “cooking” is a different Art funding system and a network of Galleries that are called “Artist Run Centers.” MN Hutchinson fills us in on how they work. Then Calgary’s best contemporary Art Dealers, Emily Barnett and Bart Habermiller at “Skew Gallery” explains what they do and the outlook for the local Calgary Art world.

After listening to the opening a dozen times I may now actually be able to recall all of the lyrics to the Canadian National Anthem.
Very interesting — especially as I sit here in a system somewhere between that of the States and Canada. The “rethunk” idea of what such alternative/art-run/ spaces OUTSIDE of being a kind of minor-leagues career starter is quite important.
Nice soundtrack too — but I was hoping for the Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overweight, or — really — The Haunted.
Hutchinson gives the most coherent, up-to-date and inspiring account of the history of Artist-Run Centres and their impact that I’ve ever heard! thank you.
