Born in 1978 in Bilbao, Spain, Martin Ortiz de Taranco moved to the United Kingdom in 2012, where in 2017 he enrolled on a Fine Art BFA course at Bath School of Art and Design. He visited the United States during the spring of 2019, where he took classes at Columbia College Chicago as an exchange student.
He has now returned to Chicago for the 2019/2020 academic year and during this time, he will be combining several roles as an intern at Columbia College Chicago, with the development of his own work as an artist. Martin works with installation, sculpture, photography and performance in his practice, which revolves around the experience and representation of everyday human interactions.
He has participated, amongst others, in several collective exhibitions at the Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, as well as in the 2018 editions of Fringe Arts Bath and Inventory of Behaviours at Tate Exchange. His first solo exhibition, 36 Days in China – an immersive photographic installation – was held in December 2018 at Sion Hill Gallery, Bath School of Art and Design.
