			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If there&#8217;s one thing readers of the <em>Bad at Sports</em> blog share, besides a love of art, it&#8217;s an affection for podcasts. Duncan assures me that most of our listeners come through iTunes, which isn&#8217;t surprising. I probably interact with iTunes everyday, not because I want to, but because it&#8217;s ubiquitous. One thing I don&#8217;t do much of is spend time at the iTunes store. My podcasts load automatically, I stream my television, and I still purchase music the old fashioned way&#8211;on compact disc. Yet recently I&#8217;ve found a reason to love iTunes, and that&#8217;s iTunes U.</p>
<p>In case you are unfamiliar, iTunes U is just like iTunes but with less Katy Perry. Clicking on the Fine Arts tab will take you to sea of offerings from well-known universities such as Harvard and Yale as well as venerable institutions that we might not immediately consider educational, like MoMA. Before I found Bad at Sports, I listened to a dozen &#8220;art&#8221; podcasts I had browsed out of iTunes, one of which was simply two stoned guys walking around the Seattle Art Museum talking about the work they saw, but never letting their listeners in on the secret of which piece they were looking at. This kind of monkey-business won&#8217;t be found on iTunes U. Their definition of &#8220;fine art&#8221; is broad, including, of course, visual art, but also media studies, music, theater, and cooking. The variety of format is broad as well. There are regular podcasts like the one you already listen to each week, video lectures, but there are also fully-produced magazine-style shows that look as good as anything you&#8217;d see on your local PBS station.</p>
<p>By no means exhaustive, I&#8217;ve picked a few highlights that I thought would be of interest. The School of Visual Arts (SVA) has an impressive collection of video lectures about contemporary art and culture. These are organized in the most boring way possible, by department, with the name of the chairperson as your guide. I&#8217;m currently watching a symposium called &#8220;Where the Truth Lies&#8221; that discusses propaganda in documentary film. From The Experience Music Project (EMP) you&#8217;ll find 2009&#8242;s (and 2010 and 2011) <a title="Pop Conference" href="http://www.empmuseum.org/education/index.asp?categoryID=26" target="_blank">Pop Conference </a>on the theme of Dance Music Sex Romance: Pop and the Body Politic. Particularly interesting is the lecture by David Scott, &#8220;Gay for Play: The Love that Dare Not Speak Its Name Certainly Does Sell Records.&#8221; Here an audio only podcast is just fine. Lastly, while I usually try to steer clear of all things Florida, The University of Southern Florida has a great series called Lit2Go, which is fantastic. Really nothing more than a collection of classics read aloud by English professors, Lit2Go is a great time. I just finished re-&#8221;reading&#8221; Picture of Dorian Gray, a book that bears the distinction of being subject of Bad at Sports&#8217; only book group.</p>
<p>When I was a little girl, my mother told me that in the future anyone could learn anything  she wanted, all we would have to do is turn on the television and our greatest artists and teachers would come right into our living room. Maybe television didn&#8217;t quite live up to its promise, but it looks as if the Internet might.</p>

<p>Wangechi Mutu (b.1972, Nairobi, Kenya) is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from the Kenyan Kikuyu tribe, she was educated in Nairobi at Loreto Convent Msongari (1978-1989) and later studied at the United World College of the Atlantic, Wales (I.B., 1991). Mutu moved to New York in the 1990s, focusing on Fine Arts and Anthropology at the New School for Social Research and Parsons School of Art and Design. She earned a BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of the Arts and Science in 1996, and then received an MFA from Yale University (2000).</p>
<p>Mutu’s work has been exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Miami Art Museum, Tate Modern in London, the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York, Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf, Germany, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Her first solo exhibition at a major North American museum opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario in March 2010.[1]<br />
She participated in the 2008 Prospect 1 Biennial in New Orleans and the 2004 Gwangju Biennale in South Korea. Her work has been featured in major exhibitions including Greater New York at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and the Barbican Centre in London, and USA Today at The Royal Academy in London.</p>
<p>On February 23, 2010 Wangechi Mutu was honored by Deutsche Bank as their first Artist of the Year. The prize included a solo exhibition at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. Titled My Dirty Little Heaven, the show traveled in June 2010 to Wiels Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels, Belgium.</p>
<p>She is represented by Barbara Gladstone in New York, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects in Los Angeles and Victoria Miro Gallery in London.</p>

<p><strong>Merchandise Mart adds LA to the portfolio of Art Fairs<br />

<p><strong>The Art on the Walls of Wall Street 2<br />
</strong><strong><span style="font-weight: normal;">Even though the original Wall Street film was a better story and all around film it did lack in a few areas most of all it&#8217;s representation of art. Work, design and taste that is so garish and laughably over the top that it is highly distracting from the story being told. In the sequal the art is more established and used as pantomime of the duplicitous emotions, mood or subtext of the film. <p><strong>Egyptian Van Gogh Heist now thought to be an inside job</strong><br />
A while back there was the report of a Van Gogh theft from the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum which had the art security equivalent of a ADT window decal and nothing more (seven out of 43 security cameras functioning and none of the alarms attached to the museum’s paintings) now the talk is that it was an inside job. This very well may be true but llet me ask how hard was the planning session for that theft? How complex could it have been since the only thing to slow one down from a theft was remembering if it was a push or pull door at the exit? <p>Art major Aliza Shvarts &#8217;08 wants to make a statement.</p>
<p>Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself &#8220;as often as possible&#8221; while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.</p>
<p>The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts&#8217; project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock . saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.</p>
<p>But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for &#8220;shock value.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I hope it inspires some sort of discourse,&#8221; Shvarts said. &#8220;Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it&#8217;s not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone.&#8221;</p>
<p>The &#8220;fabricators,&#8221; or donors, of the sperm were not paid for their services, but Shvarts required them to periodically take tests for sexually transmitted diseases. She said she was not concerned about any medical effects the forced miscarriages may have had on her body. The abortifacient drugs she took were legal and herbal, she said, and she did not feel the need to consult a doctor about her repeated miscarriages.</p>
<p>Shvarts declined to specify the number of sperm donors she used, as well as the number of times she inseminated herself.</p>
<p>Art major Juan Castillo &#8217;08 said that although he was intrigued by the creativity and beauty of her senior project, not everyone was as thrilled as he was by the concept and the means by which she attained the result.<br />

&#8220;I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn&#8217;t,&#8221; Castillo said. &#8220;I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Although Shvarts said she does not remember the class being quite as hostile as Castillo described, she said she believes it is the nature of her piece to &#8220;provoke inquiry.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity,&#8221; Shvarts said. &#8220;I think that I&#8217;m creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be.&#8221;</p>
<p>The display of Schvarts&#8217; project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts&#8217; self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.</p>
<p>Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.</p>
<p>School of Art lecturer Pia Lindman, Schvarts&#8217; senior-project advisor, could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.</p>
<p>Few people outside of Yale&#8217;s undergraduate art department have heard about Shvarts&#8217; exhibition. Members of two campus abortion-activist groups . Choose Life at Yale, a pro-life group, and the Reproductive Rights Action League of Yale, a pro-choice group . said they were not previously aware of Schvarts&#8217; project.</p>
<p>Alice Buttrick &#8217;10, an officer of RALY, said the group was in no way involved with the art exhibition and had no official opinion on the matter.</p>
<p>Sara Rahman &#8217;09 said, in her opinion, Shvarts is abusing her constitutional right to do what she chooses with her body.</p>
<p>&#8220;[Shvarts' exhibit] turns what is a serious decision for women into an absurdism,&#8221; Rahman said. &#8220;It discounts the gravity of the situation that is abortion.&#8221;</p>
<p>CLAY member Jonathan Serrato &#8217;09 said he does not think CLAY has an official response to Schvarts&#8217; exhibition. But personally, Serrato said he found the concept of the senior art project &#8220;surprising&#8221; and unethical.</p>
<p>&#8220;I feel that she&#8217;s manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don&#8217;t support it,&#8221; Serrato said. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s morally wrong.&#8221;</p>
<p>Shvarts emphasized that she is not ashamed of her exhibition, and she has become increasingly comfortable discussing her miscarriage experiences with her peers.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part,&#8221; Shvarts said. &#8220;This isn&#8217;t something I&#8217;ve been hiding.&#8221;</p>
<p>The official reception for the Undergraduate Senior Art Show will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25. The exhibition will be on public display from April 22 to May 1. The art exhibition is set to premiere alongside the projects of other art seniors this Tuesday, April 22 at the gallery of Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall on Chapel Street.</p>
