I first saw artist Artist Kota Ezawa’s work at SFMOMA three years ago. The light boxes he was exhibiting, which portrayed scenes from pop culture, were also accompanied by an animated version of the Pamela Anderson Tommy Lee sex tape. This week’s Video Pick is Ezawa’s latest animation where he asks, “What if The Beatles were The Dead Kennedys?”

This week’s pick I found while looking through Artforum’s video archive. If you haven’t checked it out I would recommend it. Gil Scott-Heron’s The Revolution will Not Be Televised (1971) was a promotional video for his collection of poems, Now and Then.

About a month ago my girlfriend and I were over at Terri Griffith and Serena Worthington’s home (both BaS members). Terri and I are both working on projects that have required a lot of research in the 60s. Terri played an album she really liked by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. I had not heard of her but that was not surprising. Both of us could not pinpoint what year it was from and so I decided to settle the argument by looking her up on google. The album was actually from 2006 and Sharon is a soul revivalist. I can’t say I was not a little irked (I should have picked up on the sound quality) but still enjoy the song non the less.

This week’s pick is a video by Andy Bruntel for the band Liars. Something about this video reminds me of Charlie White’s work. Stylistically it looks nothing like his video for adicolor but the creepy factor is there.

Tuesday’s Video Pick | Wednesday Edition

I’ve been in bed sick for about a handful of days so this week’s pick is a little late. After catching up on the latest horrendiously bad Christian rock band I found an equally disturbing video of Kirsten Dunst directed by McG and produced by Takashi Murakami entitled, Akihabara Majokko Princess. Is it just me or does this video feel very similar to Dunst’s performance for the end credits of Bring it On but set in Japan? There are even cheerleaders at one point! Is this just a pop culture reference, a sign of a lack of imagination when it comes to casting, poor acting, or all of the above ?

For this week’s pick we bring you Dara Birnbaum’s Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman, 1978-79. Birnbaum will be screening and speaking about her work at the Gene Siskel’s Conversations at the Edge on February 11th.

“In her video Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman, Dara Birnbaum created one of the first examples of appropriation imagery from mainstream television, something that is now quite common. Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman, features, as one might expect, Wonder Woman, the main character of the prime-time television programm of the same name which was based on an action-adventure comic book. Using actual sceans from the series, Birnbaum ‘plung[es] the viewer headlong into the ver experience of TV- unveiling TV’s steriotypical gestures of power and submission, of male and female egos.”

Last night was the season premier of RuPaul’s “Drag Race”. While I do not have cable, I did find myself sifting through videos from the 90s and was a little surprised when I watched his 1993 video for Supermodel (You Better Work). Maybe I was too young to remember the campy greatness that is this week’s pick but this video is so amazing. Especially if you think of what was popular at the time, typically grunge and gangster rap.

Tuesday’s Video Pick | Something’s Got A Hold On Me

I don’t think I have ever touched on this before but I love soul music from the 60s. It’s about one of the only things I listen to. For this week’s pick I couldn’t pass up this amazing video of Etta James, who I adore, just rocking it out on Something’s Got a Hold on Me. If your familiar with the her Chess Records release you will immediately see the differences in this performance. Often a belter, James turns it up on this one. I watched it at least five times in a row.

While we are on the subject of soul music I just wanted to mention my new favorite archival based record company who happens to be based in Chicago, Numero Group. I just picked up five albums from them and are so impressed with their, design, sound, and research. There are not too many people turning out records like these. If you are interested in soul music from the Midwest other than Motown I would highly recommend giving them a shot. Plus they recently published their first book, Light: On The South Side, which takes a look at the history of night clubs on Chicago’s Southside through the photographs of Michael Abramson. This year they will also be releasing their first dvd which features the work of Al Jarnow titled Celestial Navigations. Okay, that is all I should say without sounding like I am plugging them too much.
