Proximity Magazine Names BaS “Best Website for Local Arts Coverage” and says some very kind words:

Bad at Sports should have received a a grant from the XYZ foundation last year to help them make their art podcast website a real day job. But the powers that be often sleep on what is engaging, innovative and important in favor of the familiar, lame and business as usual. Bad At Sports was our top local art resource of the year. Thank you guys.

No thank you Ed, Rachael & everyone at Proximity and the Public Media Institute. We really apriciate the kind words and look forward to 2010 and what Proximity Magazine has in the works.

Also we have taken your advice and hired a few free interns to track down this XYZ foundation and get that grant asap. I can only assume that the Xavier Young Ziebold award is biennial so maybe next year

Artadia

Recently Artadia announced their 2008 Chicago Awardees. This year’s awardees are: Melika Bass, Juan Angel Chávez, Jim Duignan, Theaster Gates, Kelly Kaczynski, Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger, and Kim Piotrowski.

via Artadia
“Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue is very pleased to announce the Artadia Awardees 2008 Chicago. As part of Artadia’s unique two-tiered review process, a second panel of three internationally prominent jurors, Allison Peters Quinn (Director of Exhibitions at the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago), Kristin Poole (Artistic Director of the Sun Valley Arts Center, Sun Valley, ID), and Tumelo Mosaka (former Associate Curator of Exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, NY), conducted studio visits with 15 short-listed artists for three consecutive days (October 23-25) in Chicago to evaluate the artists’ work.” Read the rest on Artadia’s website.

AIA
While we are on the subject of awards, AIA has announce their Chicago winners. None of which I am familiar with…

via Apartment Therapy
“Downtown Chicago has a reputation for being an open-air “museum” of great architecture, but we also have some incredible houses and apartments tucked away on neighborhood side streets. The AIA tries to bring all Chicago’s great buildings (big and small) to our attention through their annual awards. This year, many of the awards went to innovative homes and green buildings. We saw some familiar spaces among the submissions…” Check out the rest of this article and photos of the nominees here.

Congrats to all the winners.

Chicago Magazine has doubled down on a bad bet they made in February by not only backing the statement they made that Bad at Sports was one of the best Chicago art sites but now has named it the Best Podcast of 2008. Everyone here wants to say thank you for the award and for putting us in a position where we now have to perform to expectations.

We have a lot of growth and new projects in the works. So with the Art season starting up very soon keep checking in to see the interviews, articles, news & video that is coming down the pike. We hope to make the next year better then any before.

Quoted from the Article:

“Founded in 2005 by two friends over a drink, Bad at Sports (badatsports.com) is a podcast that manages to educate and entertain on a subject that causes the brains of most people to fog over and disengage: contemporary art. Originally a fun side project, the weekly interview show invites guests-from emerging talent to bona fide heavies like Kerry James Marshall to discuss art exhibitions, trends and news events such as the recent death of Robert Rauschenberg. With it’s loose, finding-it’s-way vibe, the show yields discussions so illuminating you begin to wonder whether the hosts-Duncan MacKenzie, a 31 year old artist and lecturer, and Richard Holland, a 36 year old artist and lawyer-are nursing dreams about becoming broadcasting professionals. WBEZ, are you listening?”

So in an art world filled with talent the Driehaus Foundation has announced this years Chicago award winners.

Rumor has it this year was extra tough and all nominees and winners should be proud.

The answers as to who they are after the jump.

Driehaus Foundation Unveils Winners of 2008 Artist Awards

Driehaus Individual Artist Awards are the only unrestricted, annual awards for Chicago artists

CHICAGO – The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation is thrilled to announce this year’s winners of the Individual Artist Awards: Jason Lazarus, Anne Wilson and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle.

“This year’s entries proved that Chicago artists are always innovating. I am extremely proud of the thriving artists’ community we have in the Chicago area,” said Sunny Fischer, executive director of the Foundation. “The Foundation supports local working artists, allowing their work to continue to enrich our communities.”

The awards are given in recognition of the artists’ past works, talent, commitment to the field and promise. This year the Foundation increased the amount of the cash awards. Each artist will receive $15,000 to use as they see fit. There are no restrictions on how the artists can use their cash awards.

Here is a brief introduction to the winning artists:

Jason Lazarus is the winner in the emerging artist category. Lazarus’ photography has earned him a slot in the Museum of Contemporary Art’s 12 x 12 New Artists/New Work series and he has appeared in group shows in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Lazarus lives and works in Chicago. He teaches photography to undergraduates at Columbia College Chicago, Robert Morris College, and Saint Xavier University. To see some of Lazarus’ work, please visit http://jasonlazarus.com/.

Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist who creates sculpture, drawings, Internet projects, and DVD stop-motion animations that explore themes of time, loss, private and social rituals. She uses found materials that are familiar and rich with cultural meanings. Wilson’s art is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Art Institute of Chicago; and Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. She is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wilson’s work can be seen at http://www.annewilsonartist.com/.

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle investigates diverse subjects such as climate, immigration and the global impact of social, political, environmental and scientific systems. Often working with technical experts across multiple disciplines, Manglano-Ovalle produces objects that are technically complex, yet engaging. His early work focused on collaborative explorations with young people in Chicago, which led to the founding of Street-Level Youth Media, a community arts organization for youth. Manglano-Ovalle has exhibited his work at acclaimed institutions both nationally and internationally. To learn more about Manglano-Ovalle and his work, visit http://inigomanglano-ovalle.com/.

“We’re always awed by the depth of creativity shown by the submitting artists,” said Britton Bertran, Individual Artist Awards coordinator for the Foundation. “The jury committee never has an easy choice, but I think they, like the Driehaus Foundation staff and supporters, really enjoy the process and celebrating the winners.”

The Foundation asks more than a dozen arts professionals to serve as anonymous nominators; five more are chosen as jurors who review all artists’ works. Nominators and jurors are local arts experts. The list includes:

Susanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society;

Lane Relyea, art critic and professor at Northwestern University;

Lisa Dorin, assistant curator of contemporary art at the Art Institute of Chicago;

Carol Ehlers, independant curator; and

Nick Cave, artist and past winner of the Individual Artist Awards.

Eligible artists must have lived in the Chicago metropolitan area for at least one year. They must be currently practicing their art, have spent some years as working artists, and have exceptional talent and commitment.

So in other words it’s anyone’s game, male or female (just to be clear thats sarcasm not irony).

The Board of Directors of the Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, held a meeting on 7th April 2008 in which it nominated Daniel Birnbaum as Director of the Visual Arts Sector, with specific responsibility as curator of the 53rd International Art Exhibition, to be held in 2009.

Born in Stockholm in 1963, Daniel Birnbaum has been the curator of institutions and exhibitions at an international level, and has since 2001 been Rector of the Staedelschule in Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany, an international academy which concerned an assessment of traditional and contemporary art as well as the development of entirely new practices. Since 1998, he has also been a contributing editor of Artforum in New York, with which he has been working regularly since 1995. Since the early 1990s he has also contributed regularly to other magazines such as Parkett and Frieze

Following the nomination, Daniel Birnbaum declared:“My recent exhibitions have all been close collaborations with artists, often individually, sometimes in larger contexts. The Venice Biennale is a new kind of challenge, but the principle remains the same: the artist’s vision is at the center. How does one steer clear of the hierarchies dictated by commercial interests and fashion? As the director of an art academy, my interest has long been directed towards another kind of influence and another kind of significance.

There are artists who inspire entire generations and these key artists are not always the most visibile in the world of museums and fairs. I would like to explore strings of inspiration that involve several generations and to display the roots as well as the branches that grow into a future not yet defined. The geography of the art world has been expanding rapidly with new centers emerging: China, India, the Middle East… It will be my ambition to create a show that, although articulated into individual zones of intensity, remains one exhibition.

”The President, Paolo Baratta, for his part declared:“With the nomination of a figure with such a rich variety of experiences, the Biennale di Venezia has
found a curator for the 53rd Exhibition able to bring to bear original criteria for selection, geared to the artist’s point of view. I am convinced of this
choice, of which I am particularly pleased. Between the valleys of ideology and the valley of the market, there is the steep hill of quality. This is where
the Biennale must plant its standard. The new Director”, added the President, “will also be an interlocutor for our reflections concerning the future development of more permanent activities”.

Sorry. We were a little slow due to power outages and the mediocre AT&T.

Art Critic Greg Cook (The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix) joins Matt Nash, James Nadeau and Christian Holland of Big RED & Shiny to discuss
the 2008 AICA New England Awards.

Using the list of winners as a starting point, they discuss the state of the arts in New England and what they thought was great, mediocre and terrible. Disappointment in the new Institute of Contemporary Art is expressed; AICA is scrutinized; and conclusions are elusive.

And the magic of Mike Benedetto.

Melanie continues to be one of the freshest bright lights in Chicago Art community!

Aside from teaching, making, and curating as any good young Chicago artist does, she is one of only two Chicago based artists (Jennifer Montgomery is the other) in the 2008 Whitney Biennial and is featured in a sizable article in the new (Feb) issue of Modern Painter.

(Although it is not the issue currently featured on their site)

Our “hats go off” to one of the great active members of this art community who deserves all the attention she can get.

In February’s edition of Chicago Magazine ( soon to be on newsstands ) they rate the top websites that are Chicago focused and/or based.

Bad at Sports was kindly named and showcased in the Art & Culture category along with other Chicago resources as Sharkforum, Chicago Artists Resource & Paul Kline’s Artletter. Not to forget the personal writings of Edward Lifson, cough, cough.

We thank every listener that has made this possible for the last 2+ years & the editorial staff of Chicago Magazine for recognizing the hard work of a handful of Chicago street punks like us.

In true form we take the recognition with one hand and flip off the establishment with the other hand (minus a few fingers). At least thats what I think the artist handbook decrees, who knows we were never good with rules.
