Art Basel Miami sees attendance rise

The 6th annual Art Basel Miami Beach closed Sunday reporting a higher overall attendance, more gallery participation and more international media coverage than in past years.
Messe Schweiz, the art fair’s owner, reported 43,000 visitors attended the fair, which officially kicked off Dec. 6 but began informally with collector parties, museum exhibition openings and other cultural events on Dec. 3.
The 200 galleries from 30 countries were selected from 850 applicants — the most the fair has received since it launched in December 2002. Art works by more than 2,000 artists were exhibited for sale inside the Convention Center and in shipping containers retrofitted for gallery space in Collins Park.
In addition to setting new attendance and gallery participation records, this year’s fair was the last under Art Basel Miami creator & director Sam Keller, who launched the inaugural fair as a sister to the original Art Basel in Switzerland.
In January, Keller will become director of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland.
He will be replaced by a triumvirate to include director of operations and finance Annette Schonholzer, artistic director Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, and director for strategy and development Marc Spiegle.

Is there an art scene in Wicker Park anymore? Why does Around the Coyote have such a crap reputation these days? Duncan asks the hard questions to Around the Coyote Executive Director Allison Stites and festival coordinator Jessie Cochran about what they are doing, what they are working on, and how they are trying to turn the program around, bring in quality curators and artists and make it relevant and interesting. They don’t shy away from straight answers.
This week the San Francisco Bureau introduces their new co-host, the fabulous Patricia Maloney, in a survey of the fall season exhibitions. Brian, Marc, and Patricia review a smorgasbord of shows including: Olafur Eliasson at SFMOMA, the opening of the new Ratio 3, Jessica Silverman Gallery, Ping Pong, Queens Nails Annex, Heather Marx Galley and a cavalcade of others. Meanwhile, Marc pitches in with a report of the LA Chinatown openings while Brian and Patricia debate anatomical merits of R. Crumb and Tom of Finland. Good Times!

This week Clare Britt from Fraction Workspace stops by to give the run down on a couple of the European shows with Duncan and Joanna. Namely Documenta and Munster. She will be back next week To consider Venice.
Also the fine and wacky folks from The Alliance of Pentaphilic Curators show up to encourage Philip von Zweck’s friends to explain why it should have been them while they “roast the bastard” in recognition of the sizable grant he won this year.
The opening and closing songs of this week’s show are there largely to amuse Kaveh Soofi.
