Great Stuff: Hark! A Vagrant

This week we are trying something new. Truth be told, we were planning on trying something new at the beginning of January but due to various mishaps we are two months late. The snappy-est title we could come up with “Great Stuff.” What that really is a subtitle for is “Great Stuff that was found in our offices regardless of how it got there.” So we begin “Great Stuff” with Kate Beaton’s “Hark! A Vagrant.”

Last fall Beaton’s new comic anthology “Hark! A Vagrant” was published by Drawn and Quarterly, and is truly delightful. it arrived our offices and quietly sat in a pile of things that needed to be read for several months, never really hinting at the ridiculous good times to be had within but one quiet afternoon I picked it up and could not put it down. Beaton’s a veteran cartoonist whose work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, the National Post and the New Yorker. Beaton is a kind of spiritual kin to Bad at Sports. Her work draws heavily on her degree in history and her broad knowledge of literature, and then couples those intellectual impulses with an absurd sense of humor which would make Monty Python proud and had me laughing out loud over and neglecting phone calls. In fact, I’ve come back to it and reread it twice since my first reading. If you are a fan of art, literature, Canada, history, and being an intellectual well making fun of intellectuals this shit will tear you up.

The high points for me include jokes about the “Great Gatsby,” the Brontë sisters, St. Francis, and Canadian stereotypes. the back covers cartoon is a special treat for those of us who’ve devoted our lives to things that are often difficult to empathize with.

Noxious Sector Arts Collective invites submissions for the 2012
WORLD TELEKINESIS COMPETITION, to be held in Seattle (WA) from
June 7 to June 30, 2012. Participation is not geographically
dependent — teams may participate from their home locations, in
North America and Internationally. Only the first 32 teams to
register will be included in the 2012 competition.

DESCRIPTION
——————-
The WORLD TELEKINESIS COMPETITION is a forum for speculative
action — an organized tournament in which teams from around the
world engage in psychic competition to remotely influence the
behavior of a candle. Matches are played by lighting a candle at
the centre of the official game board, at an agreed-upon time,
signaling the beginning of the game. A match lasts for one hour,
or until the game candle is extinguished, whichever comes first.
In the event of a tie at the end of one hour, the match goes into
sudden death. The object of the game is to have the wax from the
candle drip onto the opposing team’s side of the game board. This
objective is to be accomplished by remote telekinetic influence.
The winning team will be awarded the World Telekinesis
Competition trophy, which they will get to keep until next year’s
competition. To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the World
Telekinesis Competition, theere will also be a set of
championship rings produced for the winning team.

SUBMISSIONS

To qualify for competition, teams must submit the following:

1. A statement of interest or method;

2. A list of three (3) members who comprise the team, and a
concise biographical statement for each team member;

3. A medium-resolution (2MB) image of each team member;

4. A team name and logo (medium resolution).

Now, we have tried to not pimp people’s Kickstarters. This is for two reasons… We (just like you) have a little “kickstarter fatigue,” and well, sooner or later we are also going to have to do a kickstarter to keep our project going and we don’t want everyone to be completely “kicked out” before we need the help.

apexart and Bad at Sports are collaborating once again for their Resident Talk with current apexart Inbound Resident, Nanna Nordström, visiting from Stockholm, Sweden. Amanda Browder and Tom Sanford from the Bad at Sports team will interview Nanna in the depths of a once-hospital out in Brooklyn, getting to the bottom of what exactly the apexart Residency is, what her experiences have been during her month in New York, and new influences the city has brought.

Amanda Browder is a visual artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Missoula, MT, Amanda moved to Chicago in 2001 to teach at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and to later help start the Bad at Sports podcast with Duncan MacKenzie and Richard Holland. In 2007 Amanda moved to New York and now heads the NY Bureau. As a fine-artist Amanda has shown nationally and internationally and last year she received a grant from Brooklyn Arts Council and the NPArt.

Tom Sanford is a New York based artist. He is represented by Leo Koenig Inc and Galleri Faurschou and has exhibited all over the world. He is a contributor to Bad at Sports and one of their New York correspondents.

Nanna Nordström is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. She was born 1981 in Jönköping, Sweden and before going on to the arts she studied agriculture. She got her art education at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and at the Akademie der bildenden Kunste in Vienna. She has exhibited both in Sweden and abroad. Nordström is one of the holders of the IASPIS (The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Program) studio grant 2011 and she is currently living and working in Dresden, Germany. Over the course of the series, the Bad at Sports team will grill and provoke apexart residents in increasingly ridiculous scenarios while talking art, residencies, the role of conversation, and the inspiration that comes with travel.

PS. I will try and knock out a big post about our involvement and the series sometime in the next week!

So, as many of you know we are in the beginning stages of our second project with NYC’s apexart. We will let you know more as the project evolves but our next jam will be dropping February 9th in NYC. In the mean time, our friends would like to work with you too. Here is how you can make that happen…

For the 15th year, apexart is accepting submissions for exhibition ideas where the winners will receive the funding and administrative support from apexart to mount a show in our Manhattan space.

apexart’s Unsolicited Proposal Program asks for 500 word idea-based proposals for a group exhibition that will be evaluated by a large international jury. Submissions are reviewed solely on the strength of the idea; no previous curatorial experience necessary.

The three winning exhibitions will be presented in our 2012-2013 season.

Terri and Crew – Questioning the Art World of Today

Friday January 20th at 6:30pm

Since its founding in 1929, the Evanston Art Center has provided a forum for the discussion and debate of contemporary art issues. This evening we invite you to join our panelists for a dialogue about the art of our time as it relates to current trends in the market and academia. Topics brought to the table will include:

Has the art market become the ultimate critic?
Has boosterism replacing thinking?
Has art academia retreated into its own bubble?
What is the role and relevance of art criticism?
Have museums lost their authority?

Panelists will include: Derek Guthrie (co-founding editor of The New Art Examiner), Terri Griffith(an editor of The Essential New Art Examiner), Diane Thodos (artist and art critic), Andrew Falkowski (art instructor at SAIC & Northwestern University), and others.

This program is free for all.

Duncan and Friends – De-mystifying the Art Critic

De-mystifying the Art Critic surfaced out of a conversation with contemporary, emerging Chicago artists and intends to define the current climate of art criticism and break down the relationship between artist and art critic. Representing local and international, print and web-based publications, this dynamic panel featuring Duncan MacKenzie , Lane Relyea, Lori Waxman, and James Yood; and moderated by BOLT artist-in- residence Stacia Yeapanis, will speak to both the theoretical and practical considerations of art criticism for both art writers and artists.

Lane Relyea is Associate Professor and Chair of the department of Art Theory & Practice at Northwestern University and also editor-designate of Art Journal (for a three-year term beginning July 2012). His essays and reviews have appeared in numerous magazines including Artforum, Afterall, Parkett, Frieze, Modern Painters, Art in America and Flash Art

James Yood teaches contemporary art history and criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is Director of the New Arts Journalism program and Visiting Professor in theDepartment of Art History, Theory and Criticism. Active as an art critic and essayist on contemporary art, he has been Chicago correspondent to Artforum and writes regularly for GLASS magazine, American Craft, art ltd., and Aperture.

Duncan MacKenzie is a multi-platform Artist, Critic, founding member and Producer of Bad at Sports Podcast. Bad At Sports is a Chicago-based, weekly podcast about contemporary art. Founded in 2005, the series focuses on presenting the practices of artists, curators, critics, dealers and various other arts professionals through an online audio format.

Lori Waxman is a Chicago-based critic and art historian. Her reviews and articles have been published in the Chicago Tribune, Artforum, Artforum.com, Modern Painters, Gastronomica, Parkett, Tema Celeste, as well as the sadly defunct Parachute, New Art Examiner, and FGA. Lori is an instructor in the Art History and Criticism department of at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

CORNUCOPIA EATING CONTEST

ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) is a volunteer-run non-profit based in Chicago devoted to employing various systems of support for emerging artists and to creating a regenerating community of cultural producers. ACRE investigates and institutes models designed to help artists develop, present, and discuss their practices by providing forums for idea exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experimental projects. Each year,ACRE conducts a summer residency program in rural Steuben, Wisconsin, bringing together over 100 artists, musicians, and thinkers to make and discuss their work. Back in Chicago,ACRE provides opportunities for all of its residents to exhibit at either ACREProjects, a storefront gallery in Pilsen, or one of over 10 partner spaces.

Hell yes! Internet. You need to know that we will be in Miami at NADA with the Ox-Bow. Now. There are very important points within this…

1. We are going to be in Miami.

2. We are going to make 48 hours of Bad at Sports in one weekend.

3. We are going to do that by broadcasting “pirate style” from a cabin at the middle of NADA.

4. You can listen to everything live via a radio with an FM dial but you will have to stop by the cabin/booth to find our bandwidth or you can check us out on Ustream.

5. Our Ox-Bow cabin is in fact an entirely separate piece of art by Jonas Sebura and Alex Gartelmann.

6. We have a limited amount of kick ass t-shirts which will be available for purchase.

7. YES – THIS MEANS FOR FOUR DAYS YOU CAN LISTEN TO US ALL THE FUCKING TIME. This could change your life.

8. Richard has promised to dress like a pirate.
