I am most certainly not taking any sort of swing at Mr. Klein. His occasional newsletter are commitment to the community are to be applauded. I was trying to make a funny. He does reference Sabrina Raaf a whole lot. Not trying to start the proverbial shit. Hell I was suggesting that BAS interview her at length.

Hi All,

This is Kathryn, I agree completely. Just to explain, I feel like I’m not that good at off-the-cuff interviewing for BAS. I get so nervous that the conversation isn’t going well, that I kind of choke.

But I was doing a bit for Chicago Public Radio (if you want to hear it, http://www.chicagopublicradio.org/CityRoom_Arts.aspx) and I was getting stuck, and wanted an expert on collaboration. I called Duncan for a recommendation and he said Sabrina. So I sat down with her, knowing we just needed a 20-30 second clip. But she’s brilliant and it came out so great (becauese I wasn’t nervous because I didn’t think of doing anything with the recording when I made it). Ironically.

But YES, we should absolutely have Sabrina on again. To have her on, but not talk about her art, and the MASSIVE thing she’s putting up at McCormick place was like not talking about the elephant in the living room.

I agree. Both segments were intriguing. Good questions in part one too. I like the idea of a piece of a conversation about art — Raaf’s piece —, as something in addition to interviews, etc, something caught on-the-run as it were, something more purely intellectual. it was great to hear Raaf thinking something through.

Balz– I think of Paul as an enthusiastic supporter of Sabrina Raaf’s work — and that is as it should be — she is an amazing artist. Paul has from time to time been a punching bag on these blogs and I think that’s sad. He has been a vocal supporter of many artists in this city , Sabrina especially. There is nothing ‘unhealthy’ about supporting a deserving talent.
I’m also an admirer of Laura Letinsky’s work — I saw a show at Monique Melloche’s a couple of years ago and was knocked out — in the best way; they reminded me of Anne Sexton’s poetry– these are both artists who make work that keeps beginning.
Good job BAS.

Nice show. I think you all could have done more with the Sabrina Raaf section though, considering she has been frequently mentioned on the show, and Paul Klein has an almost unhealthy fixation with her work, she certainly is someone of note in the community.
